"Easy As" Fabric Roses

Do you like crafting at Christmas Time?
Christmas is usually my favourite time of year to sit around the dining table, chatting and crafting with friends and family.
I've always loved easy - yet - Oh! so pretty crafts that add a vintage or handmade feel to your decorating - I think pretty fabric roses fit this brief perfectly and best of all they can be made at any time of year!

Easy As - Fabric Rose - Tutorial!
- Tear a strip of fabric / old scraps of cotton and/or linen fabrics are perfect for these pretty roses
(Note: changing the width and length of your fabric strips will create interesting variations in your roses
- Fray the edges of your fabric strip
- Tie a knot in one end of your fabric strip
- Wrap the remaining fabric strip around the knot (twisting as you go)
- As you twist the fabric use a needle and thread to stitch (hold) fabric in place (or hold fabric in place with glue from a hot glue gun etc)
- When you have almost finished wrapping your rose, tuck the end of your fabric strip to the underside of your new rose
- Your new fabric rose can then be sewn onto ribbon to decorate presents etc

Fabric Gift Tag Tutorial

It's the 1st December! - can you believe it?

For us the 1st December has always been the day when our old dusty box of Christmas Crafty Goodness gets pulled down from the back of the cupboard, and our home is decorated for Christmas (although I'm always so tempted to start earlier)

So today as well as decorating the tree, I've made some personalised Gift Tags (with a lovely handmade shabby feel) for the numerous "brown paper packages" soon to be placed under the tree!

Below is a little DIY tutorial, for my Fabric Gift Tags ... Happy Decorating :)

Fabric Gift Tag Tutorial

Materials

1 x 3.5" x .5" cardstock rectangle (per gift card)

1 x 7" x 1" linen or burlap fabric rectangle (per gift tag)

Sewing Machine and thread (to match fabric)

Scissors

Hole punch and eyelet kit (or a button and thread)

Stamps, Stencil Kit or Fabric Paint to decorate

Method

- Cut cardstock rectangle to size

- Cut fabric rectangle to size and fray edges

- Wrap cardstock rectangle with the fabric rectangle to create fabric gift card

- Sew around all edges of gift tag (to the inside of the frayed edge)

- Using a hole punch make a hole in your gift tag about .5" in from one end of your gift tag (Or attach a button at one end of your tag)

- Trim any extra fabric /cardstock created by hole punch, to ensure a flat surface for eyelet

- Using hardware supplied with your hole punching kit attach eyelet

- Stamp, stencil, or paint your gift tag with a message or your recipients name etc

- Attach ribbon or twine (through the eyelet or around the button) and attach gift tag to your gift

- Voila :)

"No Sew" Christmas Ornament Tutorial

... seeing all the Christmas Decorations starting to appear in the stores earlier this week, I decided today to make some new fabric ornaments for the tree! ...
(I know ... I know ... where has the year gone?)

So using fabric swatches of my design "Linen Look Stars" in Cinnamon and Mint (as above) I made these - So Simple! - So easy! - No Sew Ornaments :)
Below is a little Tutorial, incase your wanting to make some too :)

"No Sew" Christmas Ornament Tutorial

Materials:
1 x 65mm Polystyrene Ball (per ornament)
1 x 8" square of fabric (per ornament)
Pins
Twine

Instructions:
- Tear 8 even strips of fabric
- Place 2 strips of fabric together at right angles
- Continue to add strips of fabric (as shown)
- Place Polystyrene Ball in the center of the fabric strips
- Wrap the fabric strips around the polystyrene ball
- Fasten fabric in place, with a pin (and add a loop of twine under pin if hanging ornament)
- Enjoy :)

Daisy Dress in Dusty Pink!

As soon as my "Dusty Pink Daisy" fabric sample (above) arrived from Spoonflower, I knew my days - To Do - List would be out the window!
So instead of working, I searched the internet for a cute little toddler dress pattern and spent the day sewing instead ;)
This so cute (and so easy to sew) 'A' line sundress is based on a free downloadable pdf pattern by Oliver + S called "popover sundress" ~ Thank-you ;)

Now that it's finished, I guess it's time to get back to work!
... Although It could be 'milk and cookies' time first ;)

Anzac Day

Today in Australia it is Anzac Day; a national day of remembrance to honour the Anzacs, (Australian and New Zealand Army Corps from WW1) and to remember all those who have died in military service for their country.
- Lest we Forget
During WW1 mothers and wives, who were anxious to send their loved ones in the trenches in Gallipoli, long lasting nutritional food supplements, started to bake what came to be called Anzac Biscuits

below is an old family favourite recipe ...

Anzac Biscuits

1 Cup each;
Plain Flour, Sugar, Rolled Oats, Coconut
100g butter
1/4 Cup Maple Syrup (or Golden Syrup)
1 tsp bicarbonate soda
2 tbls boiling water

1) Preheat oven to 170°C (about 325°F)
2) Line biscuit tray(s) with baking paper
3) Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl (Flour, Sugar, Oats and Coconut)
4) Melt butter and Syrup (approximately 30 sec in a microwave / or stir in a pan over a low heat)
5) Dissolve bicarbonate soda in boiling water, and add to butter mixture
6) Mix butter mixture well into bowl of dry ingredients

7) Place walnut sized tablespoons of mixture onto trays - leaving plenty of room for biscuits to spread.

8) Bake for 15 - 20 minutes, or until golden.
9) Cool biscuits on a wire rack.

ENJOY :)

Pear Harvest - Cabinet Makeover!

Yay!
Today I finished making over my new 'stock' cabinet!!!

Finding this beauty for a bargain price on ebay was the easy part - deciding what fabric to use for the makeover, .... well that's another story!

Weeks of procrastinating later, I finally ordered my Spoonflower design "Pear Harvest"
I love that even with the doors closed, you get the sense you are peeking inside the cabinet, to see shelves of pretty pears all lined up in rows :)

Before pics below:

To give this cabinet a simpler, more rustic country feel - the first thing I did was remove the fancy 'fret work' from the legs.
Then I lightly sanded, washed and painted the cabinet in one of my all time favourite products: White Paint!

Further adding to the country feel, I attached a new iron handle and French inspired escutcheon (for a key and tassel.)

To attach the fabric to the timber panels, I measured and cut the fabric to size - and simply used double sided tape to fix the fabric to the timber .
(This also makes the fabric quite easy to remove whenever it's time for a change)
Finally the edges of the fabric were topped with ribbon (applied with a hot glue gun.)

And Voila!

What a fun day I've had today printing the first of the new Kristopher K Cushions - this design features snow white olives on spice coloured fabric.

I am screen printing these designs by hand, using eco friendly water based inks, on a beautiful linen/cotton blend fabric.

These cushions will be available soon in the Kristopher K Shop!

Happy Sunday ...

Today I've been making some fun paper flowers, that are not only an ideal way to dress up and decorate gifts but are oh so wonderfully - "Easy As" - to make.

I like to make them from recycled white tissue paper, (after carefully removing the wrap so often used by department stores on new purchases) - but vibrant colours work well for kids birthday parties, and restricted or limited mixed colour palettes help give a co-ordinated look to presents under a Christmas tree etc ....

Revamped Vintage Chair

Fabric Design: Inky Floral - French Blue

I have been wanting a cute and comfy study chair for absolutely ages ... so I decided to remodel an old timber dining chair that had seen better days.

.... Using the chairs original, worn out fabric as a template and leaving the existing padding in place helped to make this (my first ever) attempt at reupholstery so much easier than I thought it would be - YAY !!!

Happy New Year !!!
I hope everyone has had a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Over the last few weeks, we have also celebrated several family birthdays - including mine on New Years Eve - YAY! - Happy Birthday to all the other Capricorns :)

... and in what for us was some very surprising and exciting news, we made Spoonflowers list of Top 10 Indie Fabric Designers for 2010

All I can say is WOW ... and a HUGE, Thank-you, Thank-you, Thank-you, to everyone for all their amazing encouragement and support :)

I'm thinking all the celebrating may have stopped me noticing until now, that we are already 11 days into 2011 - Time seems to be flying by this year.

So finding some extra time today, just to relax and sew up my first ever Bunting Flags was fabulous. (I did cheat a little with the sewing - just cutting the edges of the flags with Pinking Shears - but I'm loving the way they have turned out ;)

Directions for "Easy As" Bunting:

Cut 15 fabric flags (as included in this bunting kit) with pinking scissors - Iron flat - Arrange as desired leaving an even space between each flag - Cut enough bias tape to fit all 15 flags side by side + extra on each side for tying bunting to hooks etc - Pin flags into place in bias tape (or folded ribbon) and sew to secure - Enjoy :)

If I hadn't told you - could you have guessed that I love linen?

I know as a textile designer, I probably shouldn't be Oohing and Arring over plain (unadorned) table linen quite as much as I have been lately - but these pure linen tablecloths & napkins are so Oooo & Arrr worthy just as they are.

So ...... together with our collection of original hand printed table linens (...coming soon) I'm adding these perfectly plain, 100% linen, oat coloured beauties to the Kristopher K Shop : What could be more fun than mixing and matching prints & plains :)

Speaking of mixing and matching fabrics ... I've just seen an amazing tutorial on the Knitty Gritty Thoughts Blog for fabric ornaments. I'm thinking they would make fabulous "no sew" decorations for the upcoming Holiday Season ... but be careful - this tutorial has been blogged with a warning ... It's hard to make just one!

Vintage Shabby Rose : Cushions

This month, I've really been enjoying pretty pink, green and neutral colour palettes.

So to bring some of these wonderful Springtime tones inside, I decided to make myself some new cushions, featuring designs from the Vintage Shabby Rose Collection.

Today the rain is pouring outside my window, but I'm enjoying listening to the steady sound it makes as it hits the roof :)

Terrific Tuesday

Today has been a Terrific Tuesday ... why ? Well apart from being the first Tuesday in November and a day when a little old horse race called The Melbourne Cup stops a nation ... I also made some fun "easy as" fabric buttons :)

Using a simple button kit that I purchased from The Haby Goddess (here) it really was as "easy as" 1, 2, 3 to make these adorable fabric covered buttons (with absolutely no sewing skills required ;)

Sweet .... !!! Spoonflower have just announced a new Fabric option "Silk" : scheduled to be available from September 30.

Water Colour Weekend

It's lovely to be in Sydney BUT ... I'm so missing my studio at home on the Gold Coast !!!

So on Friday afternoon, I decided to pop into an art shop (just for a look!) ... Well you know how it goes, I couldn't resist buying some new watercolours ... so this weekend I can now sit in the sunshine sketching and painting some new designs .. Yippee :)

Hello Sydney

Although things here on the Kristopher K blog have been quiet (for what feels like MONTHS to me now) ..... I can assure you, my daily life over the last few weeks, has been the opposite!
Due to some unexpected family matters (all good) I left home on the sunny Gold Coast to once again say "Hello" to my hometown of Sydney. The city skyline may have changed in my absence, but I'm happy to say the Harbour is as magical and beautiful as ever.
As soon as I am reunited with my home computer I will post more "Kristopher K" news and updates (when you leave an Apple at home : and only have limited access to a laptop PC - I assure you, absence makes the heart grow fonder - lol)
... so missing the fun of "catching up" with you all ... and although this weeks "Night Owls Tweet" will be late, I wanted to let you know everything is AOK and I hope to be back here in Blogland soon ... !!!

This "night owls tweet" is all about printing : or screen printing to be exact :)

.... The decision to add a new range of original screen printed products and fabrics to the existing range now available at Spoonflower, has ensured it's been both fun & 'crazy busy' here in the studio most hours of the day :)

And even though I know there is still a little way to go before the new Kristopher K shop goes 'live' - I'm already starting to get those jittery butterflies from the excitement of it all :)

Catching up over coffee :)

It's Monday & I'm sorry to say I am running a little late for posting tonights Night's Owls Tweet photos ... !!!
This is just a short "catch up over coffee" post ... mmm don't you just love the smell of coffee :)

Anyway ... all being well I should be able to download and post todays Night Owls Tweet photos - tomorrow.

Things have been crazy fun, over the last few weeks, organising the new set up for screen printing textiles.
The new print table (... all 4.8m of it) is now built and the first test print run (... on a multitude of different tea towel samples) was a great success ... (photos soon I promise)

I have also been busy designing the new shop banner and buttons etc ...

Linen Samples

Just a quick photo post to-day : to show you some of the linen fabrics samples that have arrived ready for printing and testing.
I just love all these beautiful natural colours, and textures.
With so many yummy natural fabrics to consider and compare, it's been more exciting than the summer holidays around here this week :)

All going well, my first silk screen should be ready to collect in a few days time, so printing is scheduled to start in earnest this weekend !!!

I'm so looking forward to to-nights stage of Le Tour, and seeing not only the live pictures from France, but the Aussie cyclist, Cadel Evans wearing the yellow jersey :)

New Quilt & New Chapter

After another busy week, I'm happy to be relaxing today, wrapped up in my new quilt ~ featuring fabric designs from my Marie's Garden collection (... inspired by the beautiful pink dahlias, blooming in the summer gardens of the Chateau de Versailles, France ~ home to Marie Antoinette.)

Next week plans for the next chapter of Kristopher K will really start in earnest ... Whoo - hoo !!!
Did you manage to guess, from the sneek a peek last weekend ... ?

I have been busy organising new designs, fabrics, films, screens, printing tables & paints - etc as I will soon be hand screen printing a brand new collection of 'Kristopher K' textiles on yummy natural fabrics, to compliment the existing range of fabrics now available at Spoonflower.

It's still early days, but I couldn't wait to share this exciting news with you all.
I look forward to posting more updates and naturally lots of pictures soon ;)

I've just finished watching Hewitt and Djokovic play their round 4 Tennis match live from Wimbledon. It was an exciting roller coaster game, played on a lovely hot English day. (Great to see the summer sunshine as here on the Gold Coast, the mercury has plummeted)

Happy Long Weekend

It's been such a busy few days, that I've only just realised it's a long weekend -in celebration of the Queen's Birthday - How Fabulous !!!
... another birthday coming up this month, is my Grandma's, or 'Great Nanny Junes' as she's known to us.
June has always been an inspirational (and stylish :) role model in my life, as an amazing artist, and when I was younger, owner of a successful Sydney Art Gallery.
As I know she won't be peeking here on the blog ... here are some cushions that I've just finished making her, using upholstery weight cotton fabrics, from my China Blue collection - I so hope she likes them :)

... Oh how i'd like to walk around this dollhouse ;)

Fabrics used are from the "Shabby Chic" collection and include:

and Shabby Stripe Grande.

So how do you reduce the scale of a fabric design at Spoonflower?
I find it as easy as adding a fabric to my cart, and clicking the blue "EDIT" link: then after Design Size, I again click the blue (EDIT THIS) link: Then I change the size of the design by clicking: SMALLER - until I have the required size: finally I click on the UPDATE ORDER ITEM button to update the print in my order to it's new custom size ;)

I hope to see the sun shining brightly again this weekend, so I can photograph the new fabric designs that have recently arrived - and I'm also planning to spend time this weekend sewing - as lately I have seen so many projects and tutorials that I'm keen to try.

Is it just me, or did last week seem to fly by more quickly than usual?

I'm thinking my next sewing project could be a traditional square quilt (Yes I could be addicted to quilting already) / but I'm also loving this little: "Spring Look Bag" featured on the Wonderful: Sew, Mama, Sew Blog
...... and then there are the nieces to consider, who have now decided they would like rag quilts of their own ... lol

Shabby Raggy Soft and Snugly: Rag Quilt

Anyone who has ever made a Rag Quilt will probably understand, that I'm not exaggerating when I say
.... there is cotton from one end of my studio to the other ... lol

But WHAT FUN it was, making my very first Shabby, Raggy, Soft and Snugly Rag Quilt, from a mix of (Organic Cotton Sateen and Quilting Weight Cotton) fabrics featuring designs from my "Shabby Rose" Collection.

I love to design late at night (or early in the morning, depending on your view of where 2am sits in the scheme of things ;)

Lost in a world of colour, pattern and design repeats, it's great tweeting with twitter friends who are wide awake on the other side of the world.

One night Shey B (from Arizona USA) tweets:

What a week it's been here at Kristopher K!
I've been a little quiet here on the blog, due to some really exciting developments regarding the future of "Kristopher K' fabrics, that are now underway. Good Morning Sunshine

As winter approaches and the days (and nights) grow colder here on the Gold Coast Australia, it was lovely this morning to just relax, and enjoy the warmth of a lovely Autumn sun.
As waves danced and sparkled in the light and sea birds circled overhead, I felt a million miles away from the stresses and responsibilities of daily life ...
It's always so good to take 'time out' to relax, rest and rejuvenate ;)

Paris je t'aime: desktop calendar May 2010

... looking towards the Grand Palais Paris, France.
Can you believe it's almost the first of May?
To celebrate I've made another photo calendar for my desktop.
... Please feel free to use this image on your desktop if you would like to :)
I took this image, on a lovely hot summers day in Paris ... from a beautiful bridge that crosses over the Seine River.
Looking ahead I could see the amazing Grand Palais (my destination :)
and looking behind, I caught a distant view of the Tour Eiffel, while below a plethora of tourist boats made their way up and down the Seine River.
(I won't tell you how long I stood there admiring the view: waiting for the boats to clear, so I could get the shot below - lol - the things we do :)
... Ahhh .... Paris, je t'aime!

'Easy As' Headboard Slipcover

I have been procrastinating, for days now, trying to decide how to sew my new quilt / So this weekend, with a little help from my Facebook Friends (You know who you are ;) I decided to just start sewing.

... as I wanted to update the look of our guest bedroom, I decided to start with a simple "easy as" headboard slip cover.

This fabric slip-cover, is fabulously easy to make, and can transform the look of an existing headboard (be it modern, antique, painted or stained, timber or chipboard ;) in a matter of hours.

... And at least now I know where the quilt will live once it is made ;)

'Easy As' Headboard Fabric Slipcover:
Make your own pattern:

- To measure the required length of your headboard: simply measure from the top of the headboard / to the middle of the top mattress / times this length by two / and add your seam allowance.

- Then measure the width of your headboard: (This single headboard was 12.5 " wide) and add your side seam allowance to each side (if making from one piece of fabric) you have the required pattern size.

- Or you can feature strips of fabric: As shown: 2 strips of plain linen either side of a strip of patchwork fabric (made from sewing small strips of fabric together) Or design your own featuring as many strips as you want: just remember to allow for the extra seam allowances when working out your required widths.

- Sew all strips together (if using more than one piece of fabric ;)

- Hem around all sides.

- Fold slip cover in half (along the width line) front side up.

- Cut 12 ribbon ties and pin into place as shown:

- 3 on left (inside front) and 3 on right (inside front) then directly behind

- 3 on left (inside back) and 3 on right (inside back) and sew into place.

- Iron (you know you want to ;)

- Slip over existing headboard.

- Tie ribbons and Voila

.... it could then be time to pop the kettle on!

Saturday Sunshine

Today on an overcast Saturday I'm sure the sunshine appeared, from behind the clouds, just so I could photograph Spoonflowers new Organic Cotton Sateen: For as soon as I'd clicked the following photos it disappeared again.

This is the first time I've sampled the new bright white, Organic Cotton Sateen - and I can describe it in one word: LOVE

This 100% organic cotton fabric, is beautifully soft, with a lovely silky lustre and is Certified organic cotton by: Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS)

I feel like a child at Christmas time :)
Yesterday along with the new fabric proofs, my quilt fabric arrived (YAY!!! I can hardly wait to start quilting)
And the new Cotton Lawn fabric, from Spoonflower, in my opinion, couldn't be more lovely: The only way I can describe it is, soft, breezy, and as light as air :)
Then later in the day, when I'd finished arranging and photographing yesterdays proofs, more arrived ...

What a beautiful day it has been today.
The sun shone brightly and a gentle sea breeze kept everything nice and cool - I couldn't have asked for a better day to photograph the following new Kristopher K Designs - All available now on a variety of natural fabrics exclusively at Spoonflower :)
